Since the 搜索 imposed a complete ban on smoking in bars effective July 1, 2009, some bar owners have complained they've lost up to 20 percent of their trade. But not everyone is hurting - not the ones who simply moved upstairs and out of sight. Timothy Chui reports.
It's been just over a year since nicotine withdrawal became part of the experience in Hong Kong bars and nightclubs.
Smokers, like their habit, are an obrate lot, and they have proven resourceful in finding ways to beat the complete ban on burning tobacco in all public establishments.
Like the trail of smoke rising from the burning fag, smokers have headed upward as well - high into the fastness of the upper storeys of Hong Kong high-rises.
The smoking ban has been a boon for upstairs operators with balconies or patios. It is not illegal to smoke outdoors, i.e., patios, so long as it is not enclosed on three sides, according to the law.
Opening his fourth floor Lan Kwai Fong establishment overlooking the Hong Kong Brew House a few months after the smoking ban's full implementation, Otto Lounge Director Rickesh Kishnani said his balcony was a big draw for patrons, with just over half his clientele sauntering out to light up over the course of their evening there.

Should Smoking In Public Places Be Banned?
We can see such signs as “No Smoking” in some public places, which is a kind of measure taken to ban smoking in public places. However, concerning about this measures, different people hold divergent opinions. The smokers protest against that it is a kind of action to deprive of their free right, while the non-smokers are in favor of banning smoking in public places.
In my opinion, I am inclined to support the latter one—smoking should be banned in public places. There are reasons accounting for my point. For one thing, people will be harmed by the second-hand smoking if someone smokes in public places, especially the infants and children. For another, banning smoking in public places is also beneficial to the smokers. If they are banned to smoke in public places, they will restrain themselves from smoking and smoke less. In the meantime, it is a contribution to rece the air pollution.
Therefore, I advocate that smoking in public places should be banned so that we can breathe the fresh air and suffer less from the second-hand smoking. Let’s work together to create and sustain out green and fresh environment.
Should Smoking in Public Places be Banned? many countries in the world have passed laws to ban smoking in public places. Some smokers claim that their rights are infringed if smoking is forbidden in public places. However, most non-smokers regard the ban as good news. As far as I’m concerned, smoking should be banned in all the public places such as restaurants, theaters and public squares. On the one hand, smoking is harmful both for smokers themselves and others. It is reported that every year smoking causes millions of death around the world. On the other hand, smoking pollutes the air. Just imagine that you sit in a restaurant full of smoke, how can you enjoy your meal there? Besides, smoking is bad for the elevation of a country’s image in the world.I believe if smoking is banned in all the public places, most of us will breathe in more fresh and clean air. And the health condition of all the people will be greatly improved.
The Reasons Why Teenasens Smoke
字串2
is reported that the number of teenage smokers has been on the rise in recent years, which has caused great concern among people in ail walks or life. There are several reasons that account for this fact, but the following three may be the main ones.
First of all, it is easy for teenagers to get cigarettes. Cigarettes are available almost everywhere. Today's teens have more spare money, which comes from the improved living standard of their parents. They can buy what they want, includingcigarettes. Second, teenagers smoke because their adolescent years are filled with psychological problems. One of these problems, for example, is establishing a sense of identity.
The teen years are the time when young people want to be more independent from their parents and form their ownvalues. The enormous mental pressures of these years can make some people turn to smoking. A final, and perhaps most important, reason is peer pressure to conform. Teens often become very close to special friends, for one thing, and they will share a friend's interest, even if one of these is smoking. Teenagers also attend parties and other social gatherings where it is all important to be one of the crowd, to be "cool." Even the most mature teenager might be tempted to smoke than to risk being an outcast. For all these reasons, cigarettes are a major problem facing teenagers. 字串1

Smoking bans (or smoke-free laws) are public policies, including criminal laws and occupational safety and health regulations, that prohibit tobacco smoking in workplaces and other public spaces. Legislation may also define smoking as more generally being the carrying or possessing of any lit tobacco proct.
The rationale for smoking bans posits that smoking is optional, whereas
breathing is not. Therefore, proponents say, smoking bans are enforced
to protect people from the effects of second-hand smoke, which include an increased risk of heart disease, cancer, emphysema, and other diseases. Laws implementing bans on indoor smoking have been introced by many countries in various forms over the years, with some legislators
citing scientific evidence that shows tobacco smoking is harmful to the
smokers themselves and to those inhaling second-hand smoke.
