Fables, stories or novels were his favorites and he often nearly forgot eating and sleeping.When Xu was about six years old, he began to write some short stories. He was always practising writing and he did better and better. But he still kept on reading, because he always believed that “ makes a full man, a ready man and an exact man.”

Years ago, I came across a car accident on the way to school, seriously hurt, and was sent to hospital immediately. On hearing this, my parents rushed to the hospital. Knowing that I could not walk any more from the doctor, they were lost in deep despair. But my father stood on his feet with a good idea, telling everyone who knew the result not to inform me of the result but to say to me that the doctor said I would walk again. With the love and the encouragement from my parents, I kept doing physical training with confidence. Finally, I could walk by myself by a miracle, which surprised the doctor.
When it comes to how to get a good idea, I consider that we are supposed to acquire as much knowledge as possible, which provides a solid foundation for our good ideas. Besides, we should be open-minded, optimistic about life, share ideas with our friends who may have better ideas, and enlarge our reading to widen and enrich our mind.

Dear Mary,
Here it is Christmas again ... and you are still in Los Angeles, and I am still in Boston,but with a whole continent between us! It would take far more than a continent between us to make me forget the many happy Christmases we had together and the many pleasant memories we both share.
Do you still remember the Christmas party you had when you and Ed got married? That day you had a big tree in the living room and a tiny one right beside it and everyone wondered why. Then you and Ed began openning the packages just around the little tree and taking out booties, mittens and Teddy Bears——and everybody there knew you were going to have a baby! It was a wonderful day that we ever had.
That was eleven years ago, Mary. Your daughter, Linda, must be quite a young lady now. And Tommy was born the year you moved to Los Angeles, so he must be seven. I hope I could see them, but I guess it will be long.
My husband, John, is very busy now, in fact, busier than ever. He is so conscientious that he won't go away for a weekend for fear that he won't finish on time his program on Water Pollution.
Anyway, Mary, the coming Christmas day makes me think of you and recall all the nice times we used to have. John and I send our love to all the family and the wish that everything will be well with you.

The title: The novel has a subtitle-----A Novel without a Hero.

Vanity Fair comes from John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress.

The three possible meanings of the subtitle:

1. hero means a positive character; on the contrary,

no hero means no positive characters in the novel;

2. it indicates that the novel is concerned principally not with indivial heroes

but with the society as a whole;

3. it also possibly means there are only heroines in the novel but no heroes.

The main characters :

Becky (or Rebecca) Sharp and Amelia Sedley.

The two heroines are in striking contrast:

Amelia, a woman who submits to her fate,

while Becky, who rebels and tries to master her own fate,

Both of them are victims of the society.

Themes:

In a personal sense,it is about the struggle of a woman for high status by hook or crook.

In a broader sense, Thackeray criticizes the whole English society of the early 19th century, when the predominant feature of that society is the struggle for money,by everybody against everybody else among the upper classes.
