WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- The bottom line for the U.S. strategy in Afghanistan is no deep cuts in troop levels, President Barack Obama told congressional leaders. During a session with a bipartisan group of congressional leaders on Tuesday, the president also made it clear that the U.S. mission in Afghanistan would not be narrowed down to just hunting al-Qaida leaders, according to U.S. TV and wire reports Wednesday. Analysts said, based on Obama's remarks at the meeting, that he seemed to be searching for some sort of middle ground. The president said he wanted to "dispense with the straw man argument that this is about either doubling down or leaving Afghanistan." While leading congressional Democrats said they would support whatever Obama decided, others challenged him about sending more troops. Republicans pressed him to order an escalation without delay. Washington is currently split on the future direction of the Afghan strategy. Top military leaders and opposition Republicans are pressing Obama to act quickly to increase the present 68,000-troop level by as many as 40,000. Meanwhile, senior White House advisors are reportedly pushing back the request for sending large number of additional troops to Afghanistan. Instead, they said, the U.S. should focus on faster military training of Afghan forces, the assassinations of al-Qaida leaders and support for the government of neighboring Pakistan in its fight against the Taliban. As the casualty toll grows and public support for the Afghan war wanes, Obama is carrying out a major strategy review of his Afghanistan policy, which could either lead to more troops being sent or a cutback in the 68,000-strong U.S. force there.

Hundreds of people have been killed in a massive earthquake in Japan that triggered a devastating tsunami. The quake -- the most powerful to hit Japan in more than 100 years -- caused massive damage and many people are missing and feared dead.
The 8.9 magnitude quake struck Friday off Japan's eastern coast, and prompted tsunami warnings across the Pacific as far away as South America and the U.S. West Coast. The Red Cross warned that the 10-meter high tidal wave could wash over some small islands entirely.
In Japan, the tsunami swept away boats, cars and hundreds of houses in coastal areas north of Tokyo.
The quake shook buildings in the Japanese capital and caused several fires. All train and subway traffic in Tokyo has been stopped, and thousands of people there were unable to get back home.
Authorities ordered the evacuation of about 3,000 people from the area around the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant north of Tokyo. No radiation leaks were detected, but officials are concerned the reactor's core may overheat e to a system malfunction. A fire was also reported earlier in the turbine building of the Onagawa nuclear plant in Miyagi.
Addressing the nation, Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan said the government would do everything it can to minimize the effects of the disaster. And in Washington, President Barack Obama said the United States is ready to help the people of Japan. The U.S. military in Japan has opened up the Yokota Air Base to some commercial flights diverted from Japanese airports.

According to the report, with regard to the teachers and students engaged in business, there have been many disputes in the ecational circle. Some people say since the state is not in a position to spend a lot of money on ecation, let the teachers and students find their own ways to make a living. However, it will not do if everyone in a country is engaged in business, and there should be some people engaged in teaching and studying. According to me, if anything is done by many people like a swarm of bees, it won’ work. People’s talents are varied: some have good abilities in doing business. Once engaged in business, they are just like fish swimming in water. But some with poor abilities may suffer some setbacks and still others complete failure.

BBC News with Iain Purdon
The International Committee of the Red Cross says the Syrian government has given it permission to enter the besieged district of Baba Amr in Homs tomorrow just hours after opposition fighters retreated. Carla Mardini is a spokeswoman for the ICRC in Geneva.
"We'll be bringing in food and medical aid. As to the figures of the teams, this is being organised right now, so I can't give you more. We also don't have the figures of how many people were seriously wounded or dead. We'll have to see what the situation is on the spot . It's a priority for us to enter so we can assess the situation on the ground and decide how we're going to respond the most efficiently and the most rapidly."
Earlier, opposition fighters in Homs announced that they were staging what they called a " tactical withdrawal" from Baba Amr. It's been a major opposition stronghold and has faced weeks of heavy shelling from government forces with reports of hundreds of deaths. Syrian officials say the army is now in control of the area.
In another development, the United Nations Security Council has unanimously demanded immediate humanitarian access to Syria, and the statement was backed by China and Russia, who until now have resisted any moves to condemn Syria or take action against it. Jane O'Brien reports from Washington.

Xinhua said officials are continuing a probe into his conct.
Mr. Yang rose to Internet notoriety earlier last month after a photographer captured him smiling at the scene of a deadly collision between and bus and a tanker truck in Shaanxi that killed 36 people.
But it was his accessories that soon became the focus of China's online vigilantes. Some noticed the lowly public official appeared to be wearing an expensive watch. China's massive community of volunteer Internet sleuths soon found a number of other photos of Mr. Yang wearing a succession of different high-end watches the sort of time pieces a local official in the hustings would be hard-pressed to afford with a regular government salary.

Dubbed Watch-Wearing Brother by his critics, Mr. Yang went on the offensive. In a highly unusual move for a Chinese public official, he turned to the Internet to address is critics directly. Writing on his account on Sina Corp.'s Weibo microblogging service, he said he was sorry for his smile at the scene of the accident, explaining that he was having a hard time understanding the local dialect and wanted to put nervous comrades at ease.
Oldest working nurse in Americagets heartwarming surprise for 90th birthday
Sixty may be the average retirement age, but Florence"SeeSee" Rigney can't see why.
Well, that's not entirely true. She did officially retire at age67, but it lasted only five months.
As she explained to NBCaffiliate King5, "I stayed retired for about five months, then I cameback, and here I am."
Today,at age 90, she's the United States' oldest practicing nurse, still wanderingthe halls of Tacoma General Hospital, setting up the operating room and makingher fellow nurses smile.
"She runs circles around allof us," Sheri Morris, assistant nurse manager, told TODAY.com. "She'sa wealth of wisdom and knowledge, and we absolutely love her."
It was Morris and her director,Paula Swanson, who first had the idea to throw Rigney a surprise birthday bash. They put their heads together and realized that Rigney had taken the day offfor her birthday on May 8, so they decided to have the celebration on the 7th.
"We had to dosomething," Morris said. "She'd had over six decades of service atthe hospital. How could we not honor that?"
What'smore, Rigney — whose childhood nickname has stuck over all these years — hasn'tchanged stations since 1946, when she began her career as a student nurse atTacoma General School of Nursing.
"She always knew she wantedto be a nurse," explained Morris. "Over the past almost-century, sheended up in a few different places in the U.S., and at times drifted away fromTacoma General Hospital to spend time with her husband or kids for a year ortwo, but she always came back here."
Morris has become quite theauthority on Rigney's story.
"I came up with the idea towrite to the governor and send along her bio, so that he might considerhonoring her for her service. So I needed to get some of the facts fromher," said Morris. "I asked her for some information, telling her thatI just wanted to share her story with a local organization."
"She came back to me with 17pages of handwritten notes, dates, and exact months," she added.
In thevideo posted on YouTube after the surprise, Morris points out that all thehospital "bigwigs" were in attendance on the day of the surprise, including the CEO, who handed her a bouquet of flowers (to complement the tiaraand sash she'd already been given). Rigney's children even arrived for thesurprise, and a majority of the hospital staff came out to celebrate her bigday, too.
And Morris' letter to thegovernor was a success. SeeSee received a birthday note from him honoring herfor her achievements.
"I can't believe it," SeeSee says toward the end of the video."90 years ago, I came into this world. And here I am."
