我曾今总是搭飞机或开车去Malaysia，所以这算我初次坐火车去那的经历。那时我还单身，这意味着漫长的旅程无尽的无聊，陪伴的便是一踏读了又读的杂志。我在火车上四处无聊得观望。没有一个和我相似的无聊的人，我便只有坐下又读我的经济杂志。

并不是说我们没有其他交流的能力。我们的面部表情传递出我们的情绪，就像生气，或高兴，或失望。我们抬头的高度可以向他人表明我们是开心还是伤心。这就是所谓的“肢体语言”。直立的羽毛在动物中是毋庸置疑的攻击的警告。同样的，低下的头或摆下尾巴在任何动物的聚集中表明甘处第二位。
这种交流的方式是一种动物的基本动作，包括人类在内，所有动物都教育性地获得并做出这样的动作。那么这种说话的能力只是另外一种本能吗？如果是，人类是怎样获得这种令人惊奇的技巧的呢？生物学家简单地解释说那是因为使我们演讲的机械动作运作的大脑中有一个特殊的区域，但是这并没有告诉我们我们身体的那一部分在我们生物进化的历史中是怎样产生的。
