倒在挫折的岸边，苦难的岸边，四周是无边的黑暗，没有灯火，没有星星，甚至没有人的气息。恐怖和绝望从黑暗里伸出手紧紧地钳住可怜的生命。有的人倒在岸边再没爬起来，有的人在黑暗里给自己折了一只船，将自己摆渡到对岸。
20岁忽然残疾了双腿的史铁生，为自己折了一只名为“写作号”的船。他是因为看穿了“死是一件不用着急的事，是一件无论怎样耽搁也不会错过的事”，才在轮椅里给自己折了这只船，将自己从死亡的诱惑里摆渡出来，“决定活下去试试”。
