To me March 28th was a lucky day. It was on that particular evening
that I found myself at central stage, in the spotlight. Winning the
"21st Century· Cup" Seventh National English Speaking
Competition is a memory that I shall treasure and one that will
surely stay.
More important than winning the Cup is the friendship that has
been established and developed among the contestants, and the chance
to communicate offstage in addition to competing onstage. Also the
competition helps boost public speaking in China, a skill hitherto
undervalued.
For me, though, the competition is a more personal experience.
Habitually shy, I had been reluctant to take part in any such
activities. Encouraged by my friends, however, I made a last-minute
decision to give it a try. In the course of preparation I somehow
rediscovered myself, a truer me.
I found that, after all, I like communicating with other people;
that exchanging views can be so much fun—and so much rewarding, both
emotionally and intellectually; that public speaking is most
effective when you are least guarded; and that it is essential to
success in every walk of life.
At a more practical level, I realized knowing what you are going
to say and how you are going to say it are equally important. To
take the original ideas out of your head and transplant them, so to
speak, to that of others, you need to have an organized mind. This
ability improves with training.
Yet there should not be any loss or addition or distortion in the
process. Those ideas that finally find their waysintosanother head
need to be recognizably yours. Language is a means to transmit
information, not a means to obstruct communication. It should be
lucid to be penetrating.
In China, certain public speaking skills have been unly
emphasized. Will it really help, we are compelled to ask, to bang at
the podium or yell at the top of your lungs, if you have come with a
poorly organized speech, a muddled mind, and unwillingness to truly
share your views?
Above all, the single most important thing I learnt was that as a
public speaker, you need to pay attention, first and foremost, to
the content of your speech. And second, the structure of your
speech: how one idea relates and progresses to another.
Only after these come delivery and non-verbal communication: speed
control, platform manner, and so on. Pronunciation is important, yet
of greater importance is this: Is your language competent enough to
express your ideas exactly the way you intend them to be understood?
I was informed afterwards that I was chosen to be the winner for
my "appropriately worded speech, excellent presence and quick-witted
response". In so remarking, the judges clearly showed their
preference: they come to listen for meaningful ideas, not for loose
judgments, nor easy laughters.
Some contestants failed to address their questions head on. Some
were able to, but did not knowswheresto stop—the dragging on
betrayed their lack of confidence. The root cause was that they did
not listen attentively to the questions. Or they were thinking of
what they had prepared.
As I said in my speech, "It is vitally important that we young
people do more serious thinking ... to take them [issues like
globalization] on and give them honest thinking is the first step to
be prepared for both opportunities and challenges coming our way".
We need to respond honestly.
A competition like this draws talented students from all over the
country. And of course, I learnt more things than just about public
speaking. Since in the final analysis, public speaking is all about
effective communication. And this goes true for all communications,
whatever their setting.
And the following is the final version of my speech:
GLOBALIZATION:
OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES
FOR CHINA'S YOUNGER GENERATION
Thirty years ago, American President Richard Nixon made an
epoch-making visit to China, a country still isolated at that time.
Premier Zhou Enlai said to him, "Your handshake came over the
vastest ocean in the world—twenty-five years of no communication".
Thirty years since, China and America have exchanged many
handshakes. The fundamental implication of this example is that the
need to communicate across differences in culture and ideology is
not only felt by the two countries but by many other nations as
well.
As we can see today, environmentalists from different countries
are making joint efforts to address the issue of global warming,
economists are seeking solutions to financial crises that rage in a
particular region but nonetheless cripple the world economy, and
politicians and diplomats are getting together to discuss the issue
of combating terrorism. Peace and prosperity has become a common
goal that we are striving for all over the world. Underlying this
mighty trend of global communication is the echo of E. M. Forster's
words "Only connect!"
With the IT revolution, traditional boundaries of human society
fall away. Our culture, politics, society and commerce are being
sloshedsintosone large melting pot of humanity. In this interlinked
world, there are no outsiders, for a disturbance in one place is
likely to impact other parts of the globe. We have begun to realize
that a world divided cannot enre.
China is now actively integratingsintosthe world. Our recent entry
to the WTO is a good example. For decades, we have taken pride in
being self-reliant, but now we realize the importance of
participating in and contributing to a broader economic order. From
a precarious role in the world arena to our present WTO membership,
we have come a long way.
But what does the way ahead look like? In some parts of the world
people are demonstrating against globalization. Are they justified,
then, in criticizing the globalizing world? Instead of narrowing the
gap between the rich and the poor, they say, globalization enables
the developed nations to swallow the developing nations' wealth in
debts and interest. Globalization, they argue, should be about a
common interest in every other nation's economic health.
We are reminded by Karl Marx that capital goes beyond national
borders and eludes control from any other entity. This has become a
reality. Multinational corporations are seeking the lowest cost, the
largest market, and the most favourable policy. They are often
powerful lobbyists in government decision-making, ruthless
expansionists in the global market and a devastating presence to
local businesses.
For China, still more challenges exist. How are we going to ensure
a smooth transition from the planned economy to a market-based one?
How to construct a legal system that is sound enough and broad
enough to respond to the needs of a dynamic society? How to maintain
our cultural identity in an increasingly homogeneous world? And how
to define greatness in our rise as a peace-loving nation?
Globalization entails questions that concern us all.
Like many young people my age in China, I want to see my country
get prosperous and enjoy respect in the international community. But
it seems to me that mere patriotism is not just enough. It is
vitally important that we young people do more serious thinking and
broaden our mind to bigger issues. There might never be easy answers
to those issues such as globalization, but to take them on and give
them honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for both
opportunities and challenges coming our way. This is also one of the
thoughts that came to me while preparing this speech.
Ladies and Gentlemen , Good afternoon! I’m very glad to stand here and give you a short speech. today my topic is “youth”. I hope you will like it , and found the importance in your youth so that more cherish it.
First I want to ask you some questions:
1、 Do you know what is youth?
2、 How do you master your youth?
Youth
Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind ; it is not rosy cheeks , red lips and supple knees, it is a matter of the emotions : it is the freshness ; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life .Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite , for adventure over the love of ease. This often existsin a man of 60 more than a boy of 20 . Nobody grows old merely by a number of years . We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years wrinkle the skin , but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul .Worry , fear , self –distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to st .
Whether 60 of 16 , there is in every human being ‘s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living . In the center of your heart and my heart there’s a wireless station : so long as it receives messages of beauty , hope ,cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long as you are young .
When the aerials are down , and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old ,even at 20 , but as long as your aerials are up ,to catch waves of optimism , there is hope you may die young at 80.
Thank you!

A Young Idler,An Old Beggar
Almost everyone knows the famous Chinese saying:A young idler,an old beggar. Throughout history,we have seen many cases in which this saying has again and again proved to be true.
It goes without saying that the youth is the best time of life, ring which one's mental and physical states are at their peaks. It takes relatively less time and pains to learn or accept new things in a world full of changes and rapid developments. In addition, one is less likely to be under great pressure from career, family and health problems when young. Therefore,a fresh mind plus enormous energy will ensure success in different aspects of life.
Of course,we all know:no pains,no gains. If we don't make every effort to make good use of the advantages youth brings us,it is impossible to achieve any goals. As students,we should now try our best to learn all the subjects well so that we can be well prepared for the challenges that we will face in the future.
Courage -- John Kennedy
The courage of life is a less dramatic spectacle than the courage of a final moment; but it is no less a magnificent mixture of triumph and tragedy. A man does what he must – in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures – and that is the basic of all human morality. To be courageous … requires no exceptional qualifications, no magic formula, no special combination of time, place and circumstance. It is an opportunity that sooner or later is presented to us all. Politics merely furnishes one arena which imposes special tests of courage.
We live in one world, the resources are shared, every person has acquired rights, and everyone can strive for. Marine inexhaustible; earth is inexhaustible. Let us share with the world. We are one of the world have an obligation to protect him, she is our mother, life, a good mother. Allow us to protect her Let us share with the world

Knowing the Consequences of Choice
Over the past Spring Festival, I got involved in a family dispute. Right before I got home, four satellite channels of CCTV were added to the 14 channels we had already had. In prime time at night, they all had interesting shows. Therefore, the five of us-my parents, my sisters and I-had to argue over what to watch. Finally, we agreed that we should watch the "most interesting" programme... If we
could agree what that was.
However, all of us there remember that for a long time after we had TV, there were only one or two channels available. The increase in options reveals an important change in our life: the abundance of choice.
Fifteen years ago we all dressed in one style and in one colour. Today, we select from a wide variety of designs and shades.
Fifteen years ago, we read few newspapers. Today, we read English newspapers like the China Daily and the 21st Century, as well as various Chinese newspapers.
Fifteen years ago, English majors took only courses in language and literature. Today, we also study Western culture, journalism, business communications, international relations, and computer science.
The emergence of choices marks the beginning of a new era in China's history; an era of diversity, of material and cultural richness, and an era of the rebirth of the Chinese nation.
We enjoy the abundance of choice. But this has not come easily.
About 150 years ago, China was forced to open up its door by Western canons and gunboats. It has been through the struggle and sacrifice of generations that we finally have gained the opportunity to choose for ourselves. The policy of reform and openness is the choice that has made all the difference.
Like others of my age, I'm too young to have experienced the time when the Chinese people had no right to choose. However, as the next century draws near, it is time to ask: What does choice really mean to us young people?
Is choice a game that relies on chance or luck? Is choice an empty promise that never materializes? Or is choice a puzzle so difficult that we have to avoid it?
First, I would like to say: To choose means to claim opportunities.
I am a third-year English major. An important choice for me, of course, is what to do upon graation. I can go to graate school, at home or abroad. I can go to work as a teacher, a translator, a journalist, an editor and a diplomat. Actually, the system of mutual selection has allowed me to approach almost every career opportunity in China.
Indeed, this is not going to be an easy choice. I would love to work in such big cities as Beijing or Shanghai or Shenzhen. I would also love to return to my hometown, which is intimate, though slightly lagging in development. I would love to stay in the coastal area where life is exciting and fast-paced. I would also love to put down roots in central and western China, which is underdeveloped, but holds
great potential.
All of these sound good. But they are only possibilities. To those of us who are bewildered at the abundance of opportunities, I would like to say: To choose means to accept challenge.
To us young people, challenge often emerges in the form of competition. In the next century, competition will not only come from other college graates, but also from people of all ages and of all origins.
With increasing international exchanges, we have to face growing competition from the whole outside world. This is calling for a higher level of our personal development.
Fifteen years ago, the knowledge of a foreign language or of computer operation was considered merely an advantage. But today, with wider ecational opportunities, this same knowledge has become essential to everyone.
Given this situation, even our smallest choices will require great wisdom and personal determination.
As we gain more initiative in choice making, the consequence of each choice also becomes more important.
As we gain more initiative in choice making, the consequence of each choice also becomes more important.
Nuclear power, for instance, may improve our quality of life. But it can also be used to damage the lives and possessions of millions.
Economic development has enriched our lives but brought with it serious harm to our air, water and health.
To those of us who are blind to the consequences of their choices, I would like to say, To choose means to take responsibility. When we are making choices for ourselves, we cannot casually say: "It's just my own business. " As policy makers of the next century, we cannot fail to see our responsibility to those who share the earth with us.
The traditional Chinese culture teaches us to study hard and work hard so as to honor our family. To me, however, this family is not just the five of us who quarreled over television programmes. Rather, it is the whole of the human family. As I am making my choices, I will not forget the smile of my teacher when I correctly spelled out the word "China" for the first time, I will not forget the happy faces of the boys and girls we helped to send back to school in the mountains of Jiangxi Province. I will not forget the tearful eyes of women and children in Bosnia, Chechnya and Somali, where millions are suffering from war, famine or poverty.
All these people, known and unknown, make up our big human family. At different points, they came into my life and broaden my perspective. Now as I am to make choices for myself, it is time to make efforts to improve their lives, because a world will benefit us all only if every one in it can lead a peaceful and prosperous life.

Many students are the first time to be so far away form home. They come to a foreign city, a foreign campus, facing so many foreign but friendly faces.Plenty of activities bring us fresh air and pleasant fleeing.Be busy with study and work enriches our life, helping preventing our homesick.
Life in campus is different with that in elementary school and middle school. We have much spare time dominated by our own.Our campus is just like another home.People from all corners of our country come together to form a big family. There are tears as well as laughters. We have troubles but we are also learning to conquer them.We become more and more brave and more and more stronger. We are no longer the little baby that will never grow up in our parents eyes.We are growing up day by day.
I love the life in our university. We have a new starting point, a new origin and a period of a brand new life. Our freshmen life is continuing. Please wait and see our brilliant achievement!

My definition of success
Today I am very glad to be here to share with you my ideas of success. What is success? It is what everyone is longing for.Sometimes success would be rather simple. Winning a game is success; getting a high grade in the exam is success; making a new friend is success; even now I am
standing here giving my speech is somehow also success.
However, as a person’ whole life is concerned, success becomes very
complicated. Is fortune success? Is fame success? Is high social status success? No, I don’t think so. I believe success is the realization of people’
s hopes and ideals.Nowadays, in the modern society there are many people
who are regarded as the successful. And the most obvious characteristics of hem are money, high position and luxurious life. So most people believe that s success and all that they do is for this purpose. But the problem is wether it is real success. We all know there are always more money, higher position and better condition in front of us. If we keep chasing them, where is the end? What will satisfy us at last? Therefore, we can see, to get the real Success we must need something inside, which is the realization of
people’ hopes and ideals.
Different people have different ideas about success; cause people’s hopes and ideas vary from one another. But I am sure every success is dear to everybody, cause it is not easy to come by, cause in the process of our striving for success, we got both our body and soul tempted, meanwhile we are enlightened by the most valuable qualities of human beings: love, patient, courage and sense of responsibility. These are the best treasures. So now I am very proud that I have this opportunity to stand here speaking to all of you. It is my success, cause I raise up to challenge my hope.
What is success? Everyone has his own interpretation as I do. But I am sure
every success leads to an ever-brighter future. So ladies and gentlemen, believe in our hopes, believe in ourselves, we, every one of us, can make a
successful life!
Wish you all good success!

Change the World,Change Ourselves
Good evening, Honorable judges, Ladies and gentlemen.
It’s my great pleasure to stand here to present my speech— the World,Change Ourselves
It’s noticable that western holidays are becoming increasingly popular day by day, while chinese traditional festivals are being somewhat neglected. Not long before about 10 doctors in beijing university and qinghua unversity announced that we should reject the invasion of western holidays ,because they regard western holidays as an challenge against our traditional festivals and culture.
Frankly speaking, i don't quite agree with them.Indeed, we should never neglect or even discard our traditonal festivals as china boasts a brilliant history and splendid traditions. (examples). But why can't we absorb the meaningful western holidays and culture.
There are obvious reasons why some western holidays are so popular in china. On the one hand, some of the western holidays which we chinese don't have are reasonable and meaningful, such as father's day and april fool's day etc. On the other hand, the prevalence of globalization enables western culture to prevail in china. Overwhelmed by such a trend, chinese unconsiciously get involved in western holidays and culture.
With the further development of the whole world, the cultural communication between different countries and nations becomes faster and more and more important. We are indeed from different nations, but we are the citizens of the same world, so the outstanding culture of different nations is the commom wealth of everyone on the earth. The only way for us to protect our traditional culture is to reject the foreign culture? The answer is definitely no. What we ought to do is to spare no effort to ecate chinese to get to know and treasure our splendid traditions instead of rejecting foreign culture. Only by ecating can we set our confidence and belief towards our culture. Only by ecating can we play a really important role in the world.
