对于著名的清华大学、北京大学等，这些大学历史悠久、文化深厚，它们的英译校名早已形成，并被外国友人所熟知，这些都属于约定俗成。这些知名大学早已在国际上有一些影响，其译名即使不恰当也不适宜再改动，若是改动，则会引起混乱，也不利于这些大学品牌的效应，更不利于它们走向世界。中国大学统一的英译有利于让世界各国人民了解中国的大学，中国的高等教育，增加中国高校的知名度和国际性。

1.例如“北京外国语大学”和“上海外国语大学”同是“外国语大学”,但是前者英译为“Beijing Foreign Studies University”, 后者却为“Shanghai International Studies University”。特别是上海外国语大学的英译引起的争论很大。很多人认为学校的英译名与原来的中文名没有很大联系，从英译名再翻译回去已经不是原来的大学了。其实，可以从“异化翻译”策略的角度来看待上海外国大学的英译校名。当今，国内的大多数外国语大学或外国语学院，由于其学科范围已经不再局限于外语教学，相反，其涵
盖了许多涉外学科，甚至是一些理工类学科，所以在英译校名时，可以不用直译为 foreign language university。

充当译词使用。但/ 注音式0的翻译方法也只能局限于某些特殊的汉语词汇, 比如, qigong0 (气

而交通一词在含义上似乎并不为中国人所独有, 在英文中也有相应对等词语, 具有基本相同的内在含义。既然它不属于地名、河流等性质的专有名词, 也就不能用汉语拼音简单地去替代之。我国权威工具书辞海将交通一词定义为: /各种运输和邮电通信的总称。即人和物的转运输送, 言、文字、符号、图像等的传递播送。汉英辞典将交通解释为: traffic; communications 。根据我国交通大学的专业设置和办学性质, 交通一词的主要含义应为后者。有趣的是, 在上海交通大学校园网的主页上, 其校名竟赫然译作/ Shangha i Jiao Tong University。吴光华先生主编的新汉英辞典，其封面上的上海交通大学出版社, 英文译名也为/ Shangha i Jiao Tong U niversity Press0, 然而, 就在此部辞书中, 交通一词的定义却为traffic; commun icat ions; transportation0, 而/ jiao tong只字未见。
