The 3,000-year-old city is becoming a truly international city and showing a new, vigorous image through its ongoing economic reforms.

Beijing enjoys the widest popular support among the five bidding cities. A Gallup opinion poll commissioned by the government showed 94.9 percent of the public in favor of it. The IOC』s own surveys found support even higher. The Chinese government has pledged to spend 20 billion U.S. dollars building sports complexes and refurbishing the Beijing infrastructure. There are plans for a new exhibition center with twin skyscrapers that could be taller than any in the world.

Once every four years, the greatest athletes from all over the world gather together in one city to take part in the biggest sporting event on earth--the Olympic Games.

However, besides this, each of them has to overcome particular difficulties on their way to success. Some of the greatest Olympians of all time will be remembered in history.

Now,when the Olympic Games begins,there is much we can predict. And we can probably expect some form of scandal, either about money or drugs or both. There may be political protests, and possibly violence. But there will also be some performances from indivial athletes which will fix those Games for ever in the minds of those who watch.
