逃生時可把毛巾浸濕疊起來捂住口鼻，無水時干毛巾也可，餐巾布、口罩、衣服也可以代替。要多疊幾層使濾煙面積增大將口鼻捂嚴，防止火災中產生的一氧化碳讓人窒息死亡。
若住在二層樓在萬不得已的情況下可以跳樓逃生。如果被困在三層以上千萬不要急於跳樓。只有在消防隊員准備好救生氣墊並指揮跳樓時，或非跳樓即燒死的情況下才可。
跳樓也要講技巧，跳樓時應盡量往救生氣墊中部跳，或選擇有水池、軟雨篷、草地等方向跳。如有可能要盡量抱些棉被、沙發墊等松軟物品或打開大雨傘跳下以減緩中擊力。跳樓雖可求生，但會對身體造成一定的傷害，所以要慎之又慎。
事故發生之後不應好奇圍觀，一是可能會妨礙消防人員、醫務人員和警務人員處理事故現場。其次事故發生之後，建築或其它物體可能會發生變形或松動，很多不確定因素都存在著危險性，容易造成傷害。
