土家人住山區，山上天寒地凍的，所以在守夜時便有了圍坐火堆的習俗。但凡是農家人，家裡都有一間專燒柴的房子，多用於熏肉和取暖。我們常在祖母家守夜。每逢年關，祖母總是要准備許多木柴，特別是要找出一根大柴來充當守夜時的「火主」。

每當守歲之夜來臨，夜幕襲來，祖母便會將一堆上好的引火物點燃，那淡黃色的火苗如金子般美麗，偏又是那麼的熱，讓整個屋子裡充滿了熱氣。歡聲笑語也隨之解凍，隨著火苗的不斷跳躍，一些較細的木柴已經開始燃燒起來，而較粗的也漸漸冒出了青煙。有的木柴未乾，則一頭冒出了青煙，另一頭開始滲出水珠，有一股淡淡的清香味。由於祖母在一旁不斷地吹火，一會兒，「火主」便燃了起來，火焰染上了一絲紅色，映在祖母臉上，喜氣洋洋的，映在我們臉上，也平添了一絲歡樂。農家講究不生二次火，尤其是點燃後的歲火，更是馬虎不得，徜若這「火主」不能一回點燃，那整個春節便沒有了喜慶的氣氛。「火主」還得燃一夜，徜若中途斷了火，那便象徵這一家會斷了香火，一年都沒什麼喜慶味兒了。

十二點的鍾聲敲響，千家萬戶幾乎同時打開大門，先迎一陣財神等吉神之後，再將鞭炮點燃，一時間，黑夜變白晝，萬千鞭炮如同驚雷般振天撼地，數不盡的煙花在天空誕生，毀滅雖只有一瞬間，卻如萬千朵仙花，異草般美麗，在天空中爭奇斗艷。

炮竹響起不過瞬間，結束也不過瞬間，但那新春的祝福，卻送進了人們的心裡。

The Lunar New Year is a great occasion to the Chinese people. It lasts about the first four days of the year, ring which people do not work except for the workers on ty. Students do not go to school, and shops are dosed.
Several days before the new year, people begin to prepare. Farmers kitt pigs, sheep, cocks and hens. City dwellers buy meat fish and vegetables. Houses are cleaned couplets are posted on the doors. Colourful lanterns are hung at the gate.
