很多人認為,旅遊英語翻譯,就是讓對方理解所要介紹的對象,言無定法,只要能介紹明白,讓對方理解,都是好的翻譯。其實不然,英語翻譯雖很有隨意性,但仍是有章可循的,除一般遵循「功能對等」理論(尤金.奈達)外,規范化,通用化,簡練,清晰的翻譯才是最好的翻譯。因此旅遊英語的翻譯是需要策略的。如紐馬克( Peter Newmark) 把翻譯文本分成三種類型: 即表述型( expressive) , 信息型( inform2ative) 和誘導型( vocative) , 認為不同的文本應該採用不同的翻譯策略。因而不是隨意而為。也有學者把翻譯步驟大致分為剖析、表述和校核三個階段。諸如此類,國內外有很多系統化論述或分類,這些都讓旅遊英語翻譯在一定的規范內,可以更高效的達到原文對等,原意再現的效果。
因此,旅遊英語不是隨意而為,是需要訓練和專業的。
