[譯文]某年初,孫莘老結識了歐陽修,曾乘機拿寫文章的事向他請教.歐陽修說：「沒有別的方法,只有勤奮讀書並經常寫文章,自然會有長進；但是世上一般人的毛病是練筆的機會很少,還懶於讀書,而且一篇文章寫好後,馬上要求它超過別人,像這樣很少有成功的.文章缺點也用不著別人指出來,自己多練筆就能發現了.」歐陽修把他寫文章的經驗告訴別人,所以(我認為)特別有意義.
[簡析]勤讀書,多作文,才能提高文章的質量,此外別無蹊徑.文學大家蘇東坡,才華絕世,飲譽古今,猶能這樣重視別人的成功經驗,並引為良訓,足見他治學的嚴謹、刻苦.由此,它給了我們—個很大的教益：文章的好壞與讀書的勤懶、練筆的多少,有著密切聯系.
