又喜又悲的聖誕節是怎麼回事?
又悲又喜的聖誕節
聖誕節快到了。我想要一匹小馬。為了讓爸爸媽媽切實了解這一點,我特意宣布,別的我什麼也不想要。
「除了小馬什麼也不要?」爸爸問。
「什麼也不要。」我說。
「即使是一雙高統靴也不要?」
這倒讓我為難了。我的確想要雙靴子,但我還是堅持只要小馬。「不要,即使靴子也不要。」
「糖果也不想要?總該有些東西把你的長統襪子塞滿吧,再說聖誕老人也沒法把小馬進襪子里去呀。」
這話不假,而且聖誕老人也沒法牽著小馬從煙囪里下來。但是不行。「我只要一匹小馬,」我說。「得不到小馬,就什麼也別給我,別給我。」
聖誕節前夕,我把我的長統襪跟姐妹們的掛在一起。
第二天早晨,我和姐妹們六點就醒了。接著我們就沖下樓,來到壁爐前。嘿,禮物全放在那兒,各種各樣的奇妙玩意兒,一堆一堆的禮物,混合交雜在一起。只有我的長統襪是空的,軟綿綿地掛在那兒,裡面空無一物,襪子下方和四周——什麼也沒有。我的姐妹們已經跪下,每個人都跪在自己那堆禮物旁邊;她們高興地叫呀嚷呀,直到抬起頭見我站在那兒,一副可憐巴巴的樣子才閉住口。她們走到我跟前,摸了摸我的襪子:什麼也沒有。
當時我究竟哭沒哭,我不記得了,但我的姐妹們確實是哭了。她們一起跟我跑回到我的床邊,在那兒我們一塊兒放聲大哭,一直哭到我心裡橫生出一股怒氣。這樣一來,心裡好受了些。我站起來,穿好衣服,把姐妹們統統從身邊趕跑,獨自走出屋子,來到馬廄里,就我一個人守在那兒低聲抽泣。母親來到我身邊,竭力想安慰我。但我根本不需要什麼安慰。她離開我,一邊大聲數落著父親一邊向屋裡走去。
姐妹們來到我跟前,但我對她們很粗魯。我從她們身邊跑開了。我繞到房子前面,坐在台階上;哭過以後,我感到陣陣心酸。哭過以後,我感到陣陣心酸。我錯了,我受傷了。父親心裡肯定也有點不好受。我看見他正從窗口朝外張望。有一兩個鍾頭,他大概一直在留神我的動靜;他只把窗簾掀開一點兒,生怕我發現他,但我還是看到他的臉。我覺得現在我還能看到他臉上的憂慮神情,那種擔心而又焦急的神情。
一兩個鍾頭後,我突然看見有人騎著一匹小馬打街那頭過來了——一匹小馬,馬背上還配著一副嶄新的馬鞍子,一副我所看到過的最漂亮的馬鞍子,而且是一副供小男孩使用的馬鞍子。還有那匹小馬!當那人走近里,我看到那可真是匹地地道道的小馬,一身烏黑的鬃毛,一條烏黑的尾巴,有一隻雪白的跗節,額上有一塊白燦燦的星斑。要是能有這樣一匹馬,我願意付出任何代價。
那人一路騎過來,挨家看著門牌號碼,可就在我的希望——我的不可能實現的希望——在心裡升起時,他卻看了看我們家的大門走過去了——他,連同那匹小馬和那副馬鞍子。我再也受不了啦。我撲倒在台階上,哇地失聲痛哭起來。突然我聽到一個說話的聲音。
「喂,小弟弟,」那聲音說。「你認識一個叫倫尼.斯蒂芬斯的小男孩嗎?」
我抬起頭。原來就是那個騎著小馬的人,他又回來了。
「認識,」我流著眼淚,慌亂而興奮地說。「就是我。」
「噢,」他說。「這么說這是你的馬了。我到處在找你,找你們家的房子。你們干嗎不把門牌掛在顯眼的地方呢?」
「下來,」我一邊說,一邊向他奔去。我要騎馬。
他還在往下說,說什麼「本該七點鍾就到這里,但是——」
我差不多一句話也沒聽進去,我簡直等不及了。我太高興了,太激動了。我策馬沿著大街往前跑。這么漂亮的一匹小馬。而且是我的!過了一會兒,我掉轉馬頭,催馬小跑著返回馬廄。全家人都在那兒了,爸爸、媽媽、姐妹們。他們都在為我張羅著,個個興高采烈。他們把干我這一新行當所需要的用具——馬梳子、刷子、乾草叉——全部養馬用具安放得井井有條,而且草料棚里還堆有乾草。
可是,我父親如此精心安排的那個聖誕節,是我一生中所經歷的最好的一次還是最糟的一次聖誕節呢?他常常問我這個問題。小時候我始終回答不上來。現在,我覺得那個聖誕節既是最好的,又是最糟的。因為在這一天里,先是令人心碎的痛苦,繼而是極度的喜悅,從一個極端跳到另一個極端——變換得實在太快了。就是一個成年人,恐怕也難以承受得了吧。
