Some Strategies for Learning English
Learning English is by no means easy. It takes great diligence and prolonged effort.

Nevertheless, while you cannot export to gain a good command of English without sustained hard work, there are various helpful learning strategies you employ to make the task easier. Here are some of them.

雖然不經過持續的刻苦努力便不能期望精通英語,然而還是有各種有用的學習策略可以用來使這一任務變得容易一些.一下便是其中的幾種.

1. Do not treat all new words in exactly the same way. Have you ever complained about your memory because you find it simply impossible to memorize all the new words you are learning? But, in fact, it is not your memory that is at fault. If you cram your head with too many new words at a time, some of them are bound to be crowded out. What you need to do is to deal with new words in different ways according it how frequently they occur in everyday use. While active words demand constant practice and useful words must be committed to memory, words that do not often occur in everyday situations require just a nodding acquaintance. You will find concentrating on active and useful words the most effective route to enlarging your vocabulary.

In learning English, you must pay attention not only to the meaning of a word, but also to the way native speakers use it in their daily lives.

Perhaps the easiest way to practice speaking is to rehearse aloud, since this can be done at any time, in any place, and without a partner. For instance, you can look at pictures or objects around you and try to describe them in detail. You can also rehearse everyday situations. After you have made a purchase in a shop or finished a meal in a restaurant and paid the check, pretend that all this happened in an English-speaking country and try to act it out in English.

As you go on, you will find that you can do more pages a day and handle materials at a higher lever of difficulty.

「除了小馬什麼也不要?」爸爸問。

「什麼也不要。」我說。

「即使是一雙高統靴也不要?」

這倒讓我為難了。我的確想要雙靴子,但我還是堅持只要小馬。「不要,即使靴子也不要。」

「糖果也不想要?總該有些東西把你的長統襪子塞滿吧,再說聖誕老人也沒法把小馬進襪子里去呀。」

這話不假,而且聖誕老人也沒法牽著小馬從煙囪里下來。但是不行。「我只要一匹小馬,」我說。「得不到小馬,就什麼也別給我,別給我。」

聖誕節前夕,我把我的長統襪跟姐妹們的掛在一起。

第二天早晨,我和姐妹們六點就醒了。接著我們就沖下樓,來到壁爐前。嘿,禮物全放在那兒,各種各樣的奇妙玩意兒,一堆一堆的禮物,混合交雜在一起。只有我的長統襪是空的,軟綿綿地掛在那兒,裡面空無一物,襪子下方和四周——什麼也沒有。我的姐妹們已經跪下,每個人都跪在自己那堆禮物旁邊;她們高興地叫呀嚷呀,直到抬起頭見我站在那兒,一副可憐巴巴的樣子才閉住口。她們走到我跟前,摸了摸我的襪子:什麼也沒有。

當時我究竟哭沒哭,我不記得了,但我的姐妹們確實是哭了。她們一起跟我跑回到我的床邊,在那兒我們一塊兒放聲大哭,一直哭到我心裡橫生出一股怒氣。這樣一來,心裡好受了些。我站起來,穿好衣服,把姐妹們統統從身邊趕跑,獨自走出屋子,來到馬廄里,就我一個人守在那兒低聲抽泣。母親來到我身邊,竭力想安慰我。但我根本不需要什麼安慰。她離開我,一邊大聲數落著父親一邊向屋裡走去。

姐妹們來到我跟前,但我對她們很粗魯。我從她們身邊跑開了。我繞到房子前面,坐在台階上;哭過以後,我感到陣陣心酸。哭過以後,我感到陣陣心酸。我錯了,我受傷了。父親心裡肯定也有點不好受。我看見他正從窗口朝外張望。有一兩個鍾頭,他大概一直在留神我的動靜;他只把窗簾掀開一點兒,生怕我發現他,但我還是看到他的臉。我覺得現在我還能看到他臉上的憂慮神情,那種擔心而又焦急的神情。

一兩個鍾頭後,我突然看見有人騎著一匹小馬打街那頭過來了——一匹小馬,馬背上還配著一副嶄新的馬鞍子,一副我所看到過的最漂亮的馬鞍子,而且是一副供小男孩使用的馬鞍子。還有那匹小馬!當那人走近里,我看到那可真是匹地地道道的小馬,一身烏黑的鬃毛,一條烏黑的尾巴,有一隻雪白的跗節,額上有一塊白燦燦的星斑。要是能有這樣一匹馬,我願意付出任何代價。

那人一路騎過來,挨家看著門牌號碼,可就在我的希望——我的不可能實現的希望——在心裡升起時,他卻看了看我們家的大門走過去了——他,連同那匹小馬和那副馬鞍子。我再也受不了啦。我撲倒在台階上,哇地失聲痛哭起來。突然我聽到一個說話的聲音。

「喂,小弟弟,」那聲音說。「你認識一個叫倫尼.斯蒂芬斯的小男孩嗎?」

我抬起頭。原來就是那個騎著小馬的人,他又回來了。

「認識,」我流著眼淚,慌亂而興奮地說。「就是我。」

「噢,」他說。「這么說這是你的馬了。我到處在找你,找你們家的房子。你們干嗎不把門牌掛在顯眼的地方呢?」

「下來,」我一邊說,一邊向他奔去。我要騎馬。

他還在往下說,說什麼「本該七點鍾就到這里,但是——」

我差不多一句話也沒聽進去,我簡直等不及了。我太高興了,太激動了。我策馬沿著大街往前跑。這么漂亮的一匹小馬。而且是我的!過了一會兒,我掉轉馬頭,催馬小跑著返回馬廄。全家人都在那兒了,爸爸、媽媽、姐妹們。他們都在為我張羅著,個個興高采烈。他們把干我這一新行當所需要的用具——馬梳子、刷子、乾草叉——全部養馬用具安放得井井有條,而且草料棚里還堆有乾草。

可是,我父親如此精心安排的那個聖誕節,是我一生中所經歷的最好的一次還是最糟的一次聖誕節呢?他常常問我這個問題。小時候我始終回答不上來。現在,我覺得那個聖誕節既是最好的,又是最糟的。因為在這一天里,先是令人心碎的痛苦,繼而是極度的喜悅,從一個極端跳到另一個極端——變換得實在太快了。就是一個成年人,恐怕也難以承受得了吧。
