1 the way the guests were treated 是定語從句，完整句型是：the way that/which the guests were treated（客人被招待的方式），先行詞是the way，the guests were treated 作定語用來修飾the way，從句the guests were treated 要用被專動語態，表示被招待、屬被對待的方式。

by the time 用法和by then不能通用的。一個很簡單的辨別方法：
1、By the time 後面可以加東西進行修飾或是限制；而by then後面就不可以加東西了。
例如：......by the time they were five-year old.
......by then.
2、而對於前面的內容，by the time前面不一定會出現時間名詞等，只要後面有一個時間限定，表示出什麼時候就可以了；但是by then前面一定要出現具體的時間限定，因為then是一個指代詞，必修前面有指代的內容。
