1 the way the guests were treated 是定语从句，完整句型是：the way that/which the guests were treated（客人被招待的方式），先行词是the way，the guests were treated 作定语用来修饰the way，从句the guests were treated 要用被专动语态，表示被招待、属被对待的方式。

by the time 用法和by then不能通用的。一个很简单的辨别方法：
1、By the time 后面可以加东西进行修饰或是限制；而by then后面就不可以加东西了。
例如：......by the time they were five-year old.
......by then.
2、而对于前面的内容，by the time前面不一定会出现时间名词等，只要后面有一个时间限定，表示出什么时候就可以了；但是by then前面一定要出现具体的时间限定，因为then是一个指代词，必修前面有指代的内容。
